Job description

Roofers remove roofs, prepare roof surfaces, and install new roofs. Commercial roofs are generally low-pitched roofs that consist of multiple layers of roofing applied with hot roofing asphalt. Residential roofs are usually steep, and the roofing material is mainly asphalt shingles. Tools used include hatchets, hammers, pry bars, tin snips, knives, and chalk lines.

Working conditions

Work is done in all weather conditions. Heights and roof structures vary. Roofers must be in good physical condition to lift heavy roofing materials and to perform the work. This work can be seasonal and there are periods of unemployment.

Length of apprenticeship

This apprenticeship lasts two years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 144 related training classroom hours per year and 4,000 on-the-job training hours.

Minimum qualifications

Apprenticeship applicants must be at least 18 years of age. In addition, they must provide proof of high school graduation or general education development (GED) equivalent. Local apprenticeship committees may require additional qualifications.
